There is a big difference in the handling and consumption of media between the new generations and the older ones.
It is important to keep this difference in mind when creating a content, as this will help you reach your target in a better way.
The studies on younger consumers’ behavior show three key trends:
- Younger generations have no attachment to a particular media; they can consume different websites, even those considered as “competitors”. They even change fast between different media. You can take an advantage in putting some links in your articles, so when they want to change, they see your options as valid ones, hence try to always put links somehow related to the article.
- They prefer virtual media over paper media, that is quite obvious but it’s important to bare in mind this massive trend.
- They prefer smartphones over tablets. When you write and design your articles, you should use some kind of “mobile visualization”, as most users would enter using a mobile phone.
Those conclusions are very significant, but are also showing what to expect in the future; the new generations today will be in around ten years in the top of the “marketing chain”, as they will be the ones with the economic power to manage the markets. Some companies are investing in tablet apps without taking this into consideration.
The new generation is the future, but does that mean that the older one deserves to be forgotten? Don’t forget that the seniors market is booming. Those 65 and older live longer, are more active and are the fastest growing group of social media users. A study published last year showed that there were, in 2013, 39 million people in this age group using Facebook, Twitter or Skype. But we’ll tell you more on them in an upcoming post!
