EU’s connected car fight

This autumn, The European Commission will present a legislative proposal on the future of the connected car. The Commission is receiving a lot of backlash and lobbying from the car and telecoms industries regarding their possible decision over the technology that will be favoured and the framework of their legislation.

Will it be Wifi or 5G?

While the European Commission may want connected vehicles to be able to run on 5G and wifi network, it is debated that whatever law they decide to implement may bring into question the principles of fair competition and the neutrality of technology.

Should the commission be focused on the technology or safety standards?

Part of the ongoing debate is that the European Commission should focus on creating a framework on safety standards instead of focusing on the technological standards. It is believed that there is a need to have an open market, to enable competition for technology to thrive.
