Discover our latest member of the month, Andrea Alvisi:
– Would you tell us more about yourself?
– I am a freelance English, Russian and French into Italian translator and interpreter based in Leeds, United Kingdom. Since 2013, I am also a Teaching Fellow in Interpreting at the University of Leeds, where I am mainly responsible for teaching interpreting between English and Italian and general interpreting skills.
On top of a degree in liaison interpreting and translation from the former SSLMIT in Forlì (now SLLTI), I have also completed an MA in Conference Interpreting and Translation Studies (MACITS) at the University of Leeds, the same programme where I am now an interpreting trainer and a course coordinator. In the past, I have worked as an in-house Italian translator for one of the biggest LSPs in the UK and I also have experience in a sales and logistics role.
I am well-travelled, having lived in Russia, the UK, France and Ireland. Travelling is an integral part of my career which I thoroughly enjoy. I am lucky enough as my work exposes me to a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, which always helps to enrich my knowledge and understanding of the world, not to mention to strengthen my language comprehension, which is fundamental for my profession.
My cultural background shaped my other passion: food, in particular baking and cooking. My mother is a trained chef and food in Italy still plays a fundamental role in society. Every meal is a social gathering and an occasion for the family members to reunite around the table, talk and enjoy some homemade food, values which have clearly been lost recently with the rise in popularity of, just to name a few, fast food, ready-made meals and take-away outlets.
– Can you give us your impression about working with ATCNA?
– I thoroughly enjoy working for ATCNA. I joined the team quite recently (last year), but I am very happy to contribute to such a big organization. As a translator, I am responsible for the translation and editing/proofreading of news articles and video subtitles into Italian. The latter mostly relate to interviews made to movie stars and/or at film premieres, which is great because they combine the right amount of interesting information and challenging content. When you deal with the spoken word, it is fundamental to translate ideas and cultures rather than just words, which can be challenging at times but is extremely rewarding. Also, this way I am always informed on the latest movies coming out and I have access to exclusive footage and interviews.
I am also aware my translations have mostly been published on the various Yahoo! Websites. This is also brilliant for a series of reasons. For instance, I love the fact my translations are widely accessible and they help foster communication between people. Also, the fact they will be broadcast to such a wider audience makes you want to provide your best output possible, which also represents a chance to improve on your skills. Overall, I feel ATCNA provides plenty of interesting material to work with. Therefore, if you are a translator who is up for a challenge and change of scenery, then this environment will be up your street.
