Will robot journalism replace human journalism?
The world is changing pretty fast and technology is reaching extremities only seen in movies before. One of the new technological tools is the Robot journalist, else called Robots (Softwares) that use algorithm, select and organize news to share and communicate them in the form of articles, artificially made content tending to focus on important things. In general, they lack style, they’re just news communicators, not art creators.
In practical terms, a robot is able to work as efficiently as an unskilled journalist, to access to a lot of information. They’re useful to share something but not enough to create high quality contents.
As mentioned earlier, they use algorithms they don’t have the capacity to see, and analyze and think about something that happened, they just see numbers and letters and transform them into news, that’s basically how it works.
So, should journalists be worried about being replaced by a robot?
In general, you’ll be replaced by a robot only if you’re worse than a robot. This is a big opportunity for journalists; they can focus on bigger stories as the small data is being organized by the robots. So, for example, when a country wins the world cup, a lot of people will look for information about it, and the robot will create an article by itself, but on the other hand, you have the opportunity to create a better and deeper article, allowing you to use the full potential of your creativity skill.
However, a lot of new journalists will need to put their best to start working in journalism, as the easiest articles will be covered by cheaper and easier to handle units.
Making use of the opportunity
As a journalist it would be pretty useful to have bots to take care of the simple things so you have your full time to think about that story that will get you your own place among the bests.
So, Artificial Intelligence is not necessarily bad, it’s a tool and as every tool it can be used in good or bad ways; if you have the opportunity to, give it a try, instead of being afraid of changes, embrace the changes and evolve as the technology does every day.
