Sustainability and Food Waste
Sustainability is on everyones mind. To become more environmentally friendly and be more conscious about the use of our natural resources. According to the United Nations Department of economic and Social Affair, the global population is projected to increase to 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100. With the population increase, the agricultural demand and strains are incredibly high.
According to a recent article in New Food Magazine, the “agricultural demand today is 50% greater than it was just five years ago.” Regardless of the increase, there is only limited amount of land that can be allocated to agriculture, 20% to be exact according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.
With the focus on sustainability, we cannot over look the issue of food waste. The article highlights that on a yearly bases approximately “one-third of all the food produced worldwide is currently being wasted, amounting to approximately 1.3 billion tons”.
